Arrival of the Copper River kings

The annual first air shipment of Copper River king salmon arrived from Alaska early Friday morning, May 18, 2012, in Seattle and were used in a cook-off among Seattle restaurants. The fish are prized for their high oil content and flavor and typically bring the highest prices at restaurants and fish markets.

40th Anniversary of the 1972 Sunshine Mine Tragedy

Ninety-one miners perished in the Sunshine Mine Fire on May 2, 1972. The fire was the second deadliest hard-rock mining disaster in U.S. history, and the deaths spread tragedy throughout the Silver Valley. On Wednesday, May 2, 2012, the community gathered to mark the fire’s 40th anniversary.

April’s Angels

Spokane’s flag

In all its faded, 1970ish glory, Spokane’s flag flew on Tuesday in its rightful place, third only to the American and Washington flags. What would normally be unremarkable background at a mayoral news conference became a highlight because city officials have largely shunned the city’s flag in recent years, so much so, that the only known remaining city flag is wrinkled, browning and was missing for years until it was recently located in storage box unrelated to the flag.

Snow in April

As another snow storm covered mainly grassy surfaces around Spokane and Coeur d’Alene this morning, emergency managers in North Idaho were trying to figure out how they are going to repair a series of road washouts caused by record March rainfall combined with lower-elevation snow melt.
