    TACOMA – Mead gymnast Victoria Moyer understands any athlete’s season has its ups and down, but it’s fun when the up moments come at the right time. Moyer, who was a key component in clinching Mead’s first State 4A gymnastics championship Friday night, added a second-place medal for her performance on bars during Saturday’s individual event finals at the Tacoma Dome Exhibition Hall.

  • Mead gymnasts achieve area’s first state title

    TACOMA – Mead gymnastics coach Laurie Chadwick was dazed but not at all confused Friday night after her Panthers became the first Spokane-area school to win a state gymnastics title since Shadle Park won a pre-WIAA “invitational” championship in 1970. “I’m a little amazed,” Chadwick said after the Panthers edged out three talented squads in a tightly competitive 4A meet at the Tacoma Dome Exhibition Hall.
  • Colfax boys hand Northwest Christian first defeat

    Justin Berarducci led three players in double figures with 21 points and Colfax (18-5) upset Northwest Christian (22-1) 58-52 in the District 7 2B basketball title game Friday night at Mt. Spokane High School. Brandon Gfeller added 15 points, nine assists and five rebounds for the Bulldogs (18-5), who advance to the regional tournament as the No. 1 seed.
  • Pullman boys, Clarkston girls capture district titles

    In a punch/counterpunch district championship game, Pullman managed the only flurry of the night, four unanswered baskets, and used it to stop West Valley 49-45 in the District 7 2A championship boys basketball game at Central Valley Friday. As district champion, Pullman earns a first-round bye in next weekend’s regional crossover tournament, meaning its game Saturday will be considered a first-round state tournament game.
  • Gonzaga Prep girls surprise CV for district title

    Greater Spokane League regular-season girls basketball champion Central Valley discovered there’s no defense against a team playing with superior quickness and execution. League runner-up Gonzaga Prep sliced and diced its way to an impressive 73-61 victory in the District 8 4A championship game Friday night at University and a spot in next week’s Washington sub-state tournament.

    TACOMA – Usually coaches, especially wrestling coaches, are guarded after the first day of a state tournament. Count Mead coach Phil McLean as more optimistic than guarded, though. He’s not declaring a 4A state championship yet at Mat Classic XXIV, but his Panthers made an impressive opening-day statement at the Tacoma Dome.
  • CV’s 16th straight victory nets title

    After winning the Greater Spokane League title for the first time this century, the Central Valley boys set their sights on the next step: a District 8 title. Friday night at a packed University High gym, the Bears achieved that goal. Emphatically. And easily, building an 18-point first-half lead and rolling past Gonzaga Prep, 64-44.
  • Centennial tops Coeur d’Alene girls at state tournament

    For the first time since 2005, Coeur d’Alene will not be playing in the State 5A girls basketball championship game. Sierrna Short hit a jump shot with 15 seconds to play and Centennial stunned the Vikings 58-56 Friday night in the semifinals at The Idaho Center in Nampa.
