Bulldogs crack Top 10
Gonzaga is back in the Top 10.
The Bulldogs, 14-3 overall and riding a six-game winning streak, are 10th in this week’s ESPN/USA Today men’s basketball rankings. The Bulldogs defated Saint Mary’s and San Diego last week to move their West Coast Conference record to 3-0, with all three wins coming on the road.
The Bulldogs were 10th in last year’s final regular-season poll, then finished 13th in the final balloting after advancing to the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA tournament.
Texas remained in the top spot for the second week, although the Longhorns’ run is likely to end after Monday night’s 71-62 loss to Kansas State. Kentucky was second, followed by Kansas, Villanova and Syracuse. The top five are the same in the Associated Press poll, which has Gonzaga 15th.
•In the Associated Press women’s poll, No. 24 Vermont returned to the Top 25 for the first time since spending 11 weeks in the 1993 polls.
Connecticut again was the unanimous choice as the top team, and with 35 consecutive weeks as No. 1, moved within one of the record set by Louisiana Tech from 1980-82.
Fund raises over $800K for relief
Calling the initial wave of support “overwhelming,” the Haitian earthquake relief fund co-founded by Alonzo Mourning and Heat star Dwyane Wade said its pledge total has surpassed $800,000.
Wade’s donation was a one-game salary, about $175,000, while Mourning, LeBron James, Kevin Durant and Chris Paul each pledged $100,000, fund officials said. The “Athletes Relief Fund for Haiti” began soliciting from pro athletes Friday.
“Our commitment to this cause knows no bounds, and we will continue to accept any and all donations throughout the days ahead,” Wade said in a release.

Simpsons at Olympics?
Cowabunga! Homer and Marge Simpson are headed to Vancouver for the 2010 Winter Olympics.
The TV couple will be representing the United States in the fictional event of mixed curling in an episode to be aired during the Games in mid-February. Why curling?
Several of the show’s writers are Canadian, where curling is the No. 2 sport behind hockey. “We liked the idea of a sport that you could do with your spouse, and all the issues that presents. Plus, we’re hoping we get free Olympic stuff,” Rob LaZebnik, one of the show’s writers said.
