No. 4 Missouri rallies to beat No. 8 Kansas

College basketball: Marcus Denmon hit three 3-pointers in the final 2 minutes, 5 seconds, the last for the go-ahead points, as No. 4 Missouri fought off No. 8 Kansas 74-71 on Saturday night in Columbia, Mo.

Denmon scored 29 points, two off his career best.

Missouri (21-2, 8-2 Big 12) beat Kansas (18-5, 8-2) for only the second time in 12 games.

• Notre Dame crushes Marquette: Freshman Pat Connaughton had 23 points and 11 rebounds as Notre Dame (15-8, 7-3 Big East) made 11 3-pointers and rolled to a 76-59 victory over No. 15 Marquette in South Bend, Ind. Notre Dame has defeated five ranked opponents this season.

• Ohio State holds off Wisconsin: Jared Sullinger scored 24 points and William Buford hit a critical 3-pointer down the stretch, helping No. 3 Ohio State (20-3, 8-2 Big Ten) hold on for a 58-52 win over No. 19 Wisconsin (18-6, 7-4) in Madison, Wis. The Buckeyes snapped a nine-game losing streak in Madison.

• Wyoming upsets No. 11 UNLV: Leonard Washington and Francisco Cruz scored 16 points apiece and Wyoming (18-5, 4-3 Mountain West) throttled No. 11 UNLV (21-4, 5-2) in a 68-66 victory in Laramie, Wyo. It was the Cowboys’ first win over a Top 25 team since beating New Mexico in 1996.

• Northern Iowa stuns Creighton: Anthony James buried a 3 at the buzzer and Northern Iowa (16-9, 6-7 Missouri Valley) pulled off a 65-62 upset over No. 13 Creighton (21-3, 11-2) in Cedar Falls, Iowa, snapping the Bluejays’ 11-game win streak.

• UConn women extend streak: Stefanie Dolson scored 16, Tiffany Hayes had 14 points and No. 3 Connecticut (21-2, 9-1 Big East) cruised to a 66-34 win over 13th-ranked Rutgers (17-6, 6-4) for its 98th consecutive home victory.

Rookie Irving leads Cavaliers past Mavs

NBA: Rookie Kyrie Irving made a driving layup in traffic with 15.8 seconds left to give the Cleveland Cavaliers a 91-88 win over the Dallas Mavericks in Cleveland.

• Griffin sparks Clippers: Blake Griffin had 21 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists to lead the Los Angeles Clippers to a 107-81 road victory over the Washington Wizards.

• Blazers rout Nuggets: Nicolas Batum set a Portland Trail Blazers record with nine 3-pointers and finished with a game-high and career-high 33 points, LaMarcus Aldridge chipped in with 29 points and the Blazers beat the Denver Nuggets 117-97 in Portland.

Fleury catapults Penguins over Bruins

NHL: Marc-Andre Fleury made 28 saves, and Evgeni Malkin had a power-play goal to lift the Pittsburgh Penguins over the Boston Bruins 2-1 in Boston for their ninth win in 10 games.

• Canucks win shootout: Kevin Bieksa tied the game with 34.1 seconds remaining in regulation and Mason Raymond scored the lone goal in the shootout as the Vancouver Canucks rallied for a 3-2 win over the Colorado Avalanche in Denver.

• Sabres rally to victory: Brad Boyes and Jason Pominville scored shootout goals, and the Buffalo Sabres rallied from an early 3-1 deficit to beat the New York Islanders 4-3 in Uniondale, N.Y.

Alpha impressive in Aqueduct victory

Horse racing: Alpha moved into the Triple Crown picture after easily beating Speightscity by 3 1/4 lengths in the $200,000 Withers Stakes for 3-year-olds at Aqueduct in New York.

• I’ll Have Another wins: I’ll Have Another, a 43-1 long shot, posted a stunning upset in the $200,000 Robert B. Lewis Stakes in Arcadia, Calif. He beat Empire Way by 2 3/4 lengths, paying $88.60, $35.80 and $12.

Levin opens huge lead in Phoenix Open

Miscellany: Spencer Levin shot a 3-under-par 68 in front of the largest crowd in Phoenix Open golf history (173, 210) to take a six-stroke lead over Webb Simpson.

• Foyt released from hospital: Four-time Indy 500 winner A.J. Foyt, 77, has been released from a hospital in Houston, where he was being treated for complications from knee surgery.

• Hernandez outboxes Cunningham: Yoan Pablo Hernandez of Cuba defended his IBF cruiserweight title with a unanimous decision against Steve Cunningham in their rematch in Frankfurt, Germany.

• Monfils, Berdych square off: Defending champion Gael Monfils and Tomas Berdych will meet in the Open Sud de France tennis final after winning semifinal matches in Montpellier.

• Canadians shine on slopes: In a great day for Canadian skiing, Jan Hudec won a World Cup downhill for a surprising victory while teammate Erik Guay finished third in piercing minus-15 degree weather over an icy slope in Chamonix, France.

• Vessey wins narrowly: Maggie Vessey outstretched Erica Moore at the tape to win the women’s 800 meters by four one-thousandths of a second at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix in Boston.

• North beats South: Utah State’s Michael Smith ran for 124 yards to lead the North to a 24-19 win over the South in the Players All-Star Football Classic in Little Rock, Ark.

• Donaire takes split decision: Nonito Donaire took a split decision against Wilfredo Vazquez to win the WBO junior featherweight boxing title at the Alamodome in San Antonio.
